Description

LAPD Web 2012Harmonic Presents

Andy Irvine, Dónal Lunny, Liam O'Flynn & Paddy Glackin,

Vicar Street,

16th December,

Doors 7.30pm.

Following their sold out concert at Vicar Street at the start of the year and the show-stealing performance at this year’s Electric Picnic the four legends return for the last big trad gig of 2012. Liam, Andy, Paddy & Dónal, aka LAPD, collectively inhabited the bands Planxty, The Bothy Band, Sweeney’s Men, Moving Hearts & many more through decades of Irish music. Anyone who was lucky enough to attend their performances will testify that their  energy and amazing telepathic chemistry hasn’t waned.

Andy Irvine recently completed two rapturously received sold out performances at Vicar Street to celebrate his 70th birthday with guest performances from Paul Brady, Sweeney’s Men, Mozaik and of course his latest group, LAPD. Irvine remains the great perennial rambler of the 1960s/70s Irish folk and trad scene, continuing to tour every corner of the world with a boot full of bouzoukis, mandolins and mandolas.  His CV is peerless. He was a founding member of Sweeney’s Men, Planxty, Patrick Street and Mozaik, not to mention collaborator with Brady, Dick Gaughan, Davy Spillane. Throughout the years he has released a series of fantastic solo albums the latest of which, Abocurragh, came out last year to great acclaim.

Dónal Lunny is another omnipresent figure in traditional and folk music in Ireland. He is the only musician to be a key member of three of the great Irish ensembles; Planxty, The Bothy Band and Moving Hearts. As a musician his guitar and bouzouki playing was often the described as “the engine room” of the groups he played with. He has performed on and produced countless recordings over four decades and he is considered one of the most progressive and open-minded personalities within the traditional sphere, always looking for new avenues to explore. His collaborative work includes stints with Christy Moore, Kate Bush, The Waterboys, Paul Brady, Elvis Costello and he was a key figure in the establishment of the seminal Mulligan record label.

Liam O’Flynn is our greatest living exponent of the uileann pipers. He is part of lineage of great pipers before him; Leo Rowsome, Séamus Ennis and Willy Clancy, all of whom he knew and learned from. As a young piper in the 60s he earned recognition performing at Oireachtas and Fleadh Cheoil events. Throughout the 70s and early 80s he was the lynchpin in Planxty, either elevating the music to great euphoric heights or stopping time with a beautifully mournful slow air. After Planxty, Liam was an in-demand musician for a wide spectrum of artists including Kate Bush,  the Everly Brothers, Mark Knopfler and John Cage to name a few. He has also recorded key collaborative albums with Shaun Davey and poet Seamus Heaney.

Paddy Glackin is regarded as one of the great Dublin fiddlers with Donegal roots. He was in the original line-up of the Bothy Band (when they were named Seachtair) with Lunny, Paddy Keenan, Matt Molloy, Tony Mac Mahon, Tríona Ní Dhomhnaiil and Mícheál Ó’Dhomhnaill. He left when the group decided to go professional and became political and sports editor RTÉ radio. However, he continued to play and recorded seminal albums with Paddy Keenan (Doublin’), Dónal Lunny (In Full Spate) and Mícheál Ó Domhnaill (Reprise) and the ground-breaking experimental album Hidden Ground with the late multi-instrumentalist Jolyon Jackson.
